September 2021 Reserves and open spaces engagement
We look after many reserves and open spaces, including walkways, recreational areas, playgrounds and more.
These reserves and open spaces belong to all of us and we need to decide what we want them to look like in the future.
Think of open spaces near you that you enjoy.
- Are the recreation facilities, buildings and structures in our open spaces appropriate for the way that you use them? If not, how could we improve this?
- What could we do to provide more opportunities for you to connect with the open spaces? How could we encourage more use of our open spaces?
- Should we focus more on creating cultural and educational experiences in those spaces? What could we do?
- Are these spaces easy to access for you and your whanau? How can we improve access?
- How can we improve the landscaping of these spaces?
You can find the current policy and strategy documents below for your reference:

Please clean up the pest weeds, fallen branches etc in Ivon Wilson Park. This park became a SDC park some years ago so it could be looked after. Some areas are not bad but others certainly are. It looks tired and uncared for.

If you look after playgrounds and the likes why demolish the one in riverton? Was it because you didn't maintain it?
Lemme guess.

Really really disappointed to see a lot of the play grounds in Te Anau and Manapouri. As the rates increase our council have said if you want a level of services then you need to pay for it. It not good enough that our services are being taken away and reduced. There are more kids in this town than there ever has been. If we want to attract more rate payers and people to town don’t we need to improve services not make them worse. Communication has been poor around this issue.Perhaps in collaboration with Active Southland (Sport Southland) an…
Perhaps in collaboration with Active Southland (Sport Southland) an outdoor equipment ‘library’ similar to those wee book libraries on an honesty system on a few of the reserve areas in Te Anau (Heritage/Delta/Fergus square to name a few). Just need a wee shed and then someone to donate cricket sets, rugby balls, footballs etc to get people out onto the grass areas together. Would be great to see it like the ‘good old days’ with strangers joining in on a community cricket game etc.Use ecologically appropriate natives in restoration or amenity projects.
Use ecologically appropriate natives in restoration or amenity projects. Select natives that are native to this region e.g. not Coprosma robusta, which is weedy in Southland.Hi, I would very much like to see at least…
Hi, I would very much like to see at least 1 more rubbish bin placed on Horseshoe Beach because every day I am picking up litter AND doggy do. There is ONE bin at the Lee Bay end and one not even on the Horseshoe Point Road end, but there is one at the public toilet there so ultimately one in the middle would surely mean less litter on the beach. I also think its time you introduced a fine for the people that consistently walk away from their dog waste and just leave it for everyone else to walk around or pick up. A SIGN stating that a fine is enforced is a good deterrent. Believe me, I have tried to get other dog owners to comply but they don't take me seriously and I am seriously over picking up other peoples dogs poo so now only pick up after MY dog. There are no signs even suggesting people pick up their dog waste {I know it is pretty obvious but some people just need to be told how to behave!!} The sign above is excellent and gets thru to every person, I know the word shit could be offensive but its not the only word in the world to describe dog waste. ALSO I strongly believe The Horseshoe Point Track is diabolical at times, it would benefit from someone at least weekly walking it and removing the debris that is scattered all over the track, be it broken branches, all the rubbish that the Pine and Eucalyptus trees (especially) drop, regular rock falls and mini land slides. Quite often there is stuff blocking the track and I have had several major back surgeries and find it very difficult to remove these so I can walk out to the point.
