Let’s get planning Riverton Aparima!
Taramea Bay is being redeveloped and we want YOU to have a say in its future.
Generations have flocked to this foreshore gem over the years to experience an array of recreational pursuits or simply what nature created.
Now it’s time to proactively invest in its future.
In conjunction with the Oraka Aparima Community Board, Southland District Council has committed to developing both the adventure space on the mound to the north and the toilets at the playground to the south.
This presents a fantastic opportunity to broaden the scope of the project to also include the remainder of the Taramea Bay area, revamping it for the enjoyment of the Riverton Aparima community and the wider Southland District.
Ultimately, we want to create a connected journey from one end of Taramea Bay to the other, transforming it into a destination where memories are created along the shoreline.
Let us know what you would like to see and do here by sharing your ideas.

I would like to see a simple camping area either Taramea bay or Howells point. You could engage with the store for fee payment. Near toiletsIts great to have the opportunity to have input on…
Its great to have the opportunity to have input on what can be a brilliant improvement on the area. Several ideas from me. Id like to 2nd the idea of a pump track even more than one, maybe a very gentle rolling option for the little ones (and older ones) and a slightly bigger faster option for the more experienced. 2 good examples of these closer to the area are lake hayes estate Queenstown and Henleys farm playground and pump track area in jacks point. All fitness and sporting activities have only positive outcomes so the more the merrier i believe. Build a new skatepark or ramp, and stretch out the frisbee golf course. Make a nice wide stairless track as far as it can go to accommodate cyclists and walkers and runners alike. And add all weather exercise stations along the way. I think pro active and well planned planting of flora goes without saying and designated car parking or vehicle access areas will add to the functional use of the area. A focus on the future approach would keep the area in high regard for many years to come.If you look at historical photos of Taramea Bay, you…
If you look at historical photos of Taramea Bay, you can tell that the beach area is getting smaller each year, because the grassed area is increasingly encroaching on the beach. I would like to see the grass area trimmed back by a few metres so we can have more sandy beach again. Perhaps there can be a defining line between beach and grass, such as a concrete pathway. I like the visual from Nick Baker. The grassed area can be used for BBQ and car parking. Something is wrong with the stream/stormwater flow into Taramea Bay. Every so often the council gets diggers in to clear the drainage into the sea - there has to be a better way to deal with the drainage and swampy land that having to regularly excavate this way.- The walkway from the whale to past the playground…
- The walkway from the whale to past the playground remove the old wooden posts , planks (nails showing) replace w posts and rope, - add history boards every 50m or so - May be a fitness trail w excersize machines on the walkway. - Old toilets replace w new and showers. - When digger opens drains flatten off sand. - Concrete sound shell have skate park features.I would love to see a reinstatement of a soundshell…
I would love to see a reinstatement of a soundshell in this area. It could even have coin operated power for use by anyone wishing to entertain. Also sheltered areas, clean toilets and coin operated showers for swimmers and surfers. Encourage the side shows back for new year and recreate the amazing memories we all have if the Carnival of bygone days. Why are they bygone.?Thanks for the opportunity to comment on what could be…
Thanks for the opportunity to comment on what could be an excellent beachside development. I agree with those that want the existing buildings and paved area demolished and modernised. I like the idea of a nicely paved walkway within large (maintained) grass areas that could be used for a multitude of community events ( markets, festivals, concerts and carnivals. Even the odd Rugby game would be cool.) The main appeal of this area is the beach and surely the days of discharging stormwater onto swimming beaches are gone. Maybe putting the power underground would lead to less faults and look much better. The old buildings and toilet need to be taken down…
The old buildings and toilet need to be taken down and replace with modern toilet and some changing sheds similar to Mitchell’s Bay to add some colour Some seating around the BBQ with a modern wind shelter There is then room to extend the playground and full size basketball court. Could Extend frisbee golf around the bay plus add volley ball area or similar.Hey team! This is all really exciting for the community,…
Hey team! This is all really exciting for the community, thanks for the opportunity to have some input. Personally I'd love to see a public trading area added to the bay. Riverton is one of the only places in district Southland area that does not yet have an area designated for food trucks, mobile vendors & stall holders. I think it would be a fantastic spot for some market days, food, entertainment, craft and swap events. A space to celebrate and encourage small business. Happy planning Ayns ?I'd like to see the dune area restored using native…
I'd like to see the dune area restored using native dune plants. There are good examples of this sort of project around New Zealand, including Caroline Bay at Timaru. Native dune species have been displaced by successive waves of exotic plants deliberately planted by European settlers in an attempt to bind up dunelands and make them into productive land - for example marram, tree lupin and pines. This coupled with grazing mammals has mean many of our dune systems are highly modified and no longer support native plants. Dunes when restored with native species such as pikao (Ficinia spiralis) can help protect and build beaches by storing and releasing sand at regular intervals in stark contrast to marram grass which binds up sand and is prone to dramatic blow outs. It would be great to see coastal species restored to this site to enable to dunes to function more naturally and also to support native plants whose habitat has been much reduced. Two such species, pikao and waiu-atua (Euphorbia glauca) are vulnerable to rabbit browse and therefore planting in an urban environment could provide just the respite needed. Pikao is a valued weaving material and there could be an opportunity to establish a population at Aparima/Riverton which could be used by locals for this purpose. Other species which would be suitable here on the backdune area include silver tussock (Poa cita), wharariki (Phormium cookianum) and wiwi (Ficinia nodosa) and Hebe elliptica. Please find attached an image of Fortrose Spit dunes which are one of the best examples of natural dunes with pikao in Southland excluding Rakiura/Stewart Island. Please do not use weedy exotic species like Agapanthus or decorative cultivars of native plants which are not native to the area. I can highly recommend making contact with the folks at the New Zealand Coastal Restoration Network to get advice on dune restoration.Redeveloping this stretch and connecting the existing playground to the…
Redeveloping this stretch and connecting the existing playground to the river mouth playground would be an awesome way to utilise the area. A raised and paved coastal walkway similar to New Plymouth with seating areas and surrounding vegetation would be a user friendly option for everyone. https://www.wildtaranaki.co.nz/our-adventures/the-coastal-walkway/ As an attraction this area would also suit a Pump Track, similar to the Pump Track in Mataura. Pump tracks are ideal for bikes, scooters, skateboards and suit well with the surfing community and visitors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTuyEApKpxk
