Background

We would really like your help to choose a new location for Riverton’s Big Paua Shell.

The iconic feature must be relocated as the private land it was previously on has been sold.

The paua shell was removed from its spot in Palmerston Street and is currently being restored by Bruce Shields and the team at Ocean Shell.

To enable a reasonable lifespan the shell must face away from the prevailing weather and sun to avoid bleaching and rapid degrading.

Which is the best location for the Big Paua Shell?

Below are the five most frequent suggestions for the new location. We have identified the pros and cons of each site, which may help you to form a decision.

The suggested locations are:

  1. Opposite Riverton fire station near skatepark
  2. Napier Street intersection with Bath Road
  3. Palmerston Street playground
  4. Pilots Reserve lookout by whale
  5. Taramea Bay playground on beachfront

Vote for the winning location!

We would like you to vote for the preferred new location. You can vote here, using the star rating system, or you can head to the SDC office/library, Te Hikoi Museum, the supermarket and BUPA where there will be paper voting forms to fill out.

Once all votes are counted, the majority preference will be the new site for the Big Paua Shell! We will post the winning location to Facebook, Make it Stick and the SDC website. Voting closes November 22, 2023.
