Tuatapere revitalisation

Situated on the popular southern scenic route and a key traffic highway for rural businesses, Tuatapere is a town with untapped potential.

It is the gateway for the Hump ridge track which is soon to be a ‘Great Walk’.

Tuatapere prides itself on being a rural hub for many communities of interest.
Looking into the future the community board is investigating options for the railway station and the main street to foster some of the unrealised possibilities of the town.

These projects will be considered in future long-term planning and external funding options will be explored.

So, why the railway station and the main street?

The main street is a focal point for Tuatapere with it being an area of high use to both locals and visitors to the town. The railway station is in close proximity to the main street. The future of the railway station and what it may be used for will then likely have an effect on how people use the main street. Due to the proximity of the railway station to the main street these two projects are considered complementary.

AR and Associates have been working with the Tuatapere Te Waewae Community Board on developing these two plans. COVID-19 alert levels had an impact on the ability to carry out wider community engagement. However targeted engagement with community groups, local business owners, Waiau Area School and other community leaders was able to happen to gather insights. Now we are in a position to talk to the wider community and get your feedback on these exciting projects.

Railway station

In 2020 the Tuatapere Te Waewae Community Board consulted with the community on whether to retain the railway station building as a community asset. The community was supportive of keeping the building and the board have been considering options for the future of the railway station.

Main street development

The draft Tuatapere Te Waewae Community Board Plan identifies “develop and implement a main street master plan” as an objective to meet the outcome of “a community that is a destination for visitors and appealing for businesses”. The board decided that a main street revitalisation would achieve these desired outcomes.
